About How Birth Works

How Birth Works is a comprehensive guide designed to help expectant parents feel informed and confident about their journey ahead and the decisions they will need to consider.

The course covers everything you need to know about having a baby, including the stages of labour, birth preparation, pain management, breastfeeding, and caring for your newborn baby. We also answer commonly asked questions, such as when to call the midwife and what to pack in your birth bag.

As of 2023, we are excited to announce that we now offer in-person antenatal classes on the Isle of Wight, in addition to our online courses. We understand the importance of personalised support and the value of face-to-face interaction, especially for local residents.

At the end of 2019, realising the lack of high-quality antenatal education available online, we decided to bridge the gap by creating this comprehensive course. Little did we know what was around the corner, and when Covid-19 struck, we quickly adapted by writing, filming, and editing the course in between lockdowns.

We recognise that people are increasingly turning to online platforms for learning, and our course is designed to meet that need. Whether you prefer the flexibility and accessibility of online learning or the personalised experience of attending in-person classes on the Isle of Wight, we have the perfect pathway for you.

Choose from our online classes, which are available worldwide, allowing you to learn from the comfort of your own home, or our in-person classes on the Isle of Wight, where you can connect with local expectant parents and receive tailored guidance and support.

Join How Birth Works today to embark on your journey to parenthood with confidence and knowledge, no matter which learning pathway you choose.

Meet Your Teacher

I am Juliet May. I live on the Isle of Wight and am a practising community midwife.

I have three grown-up children, Oscar, a photographer (check out his work here), Robin, who works as head carpenter/workshop manager at Heartwood Saunas. Imogen is a yoga teacher and founder of 'Cake and Yoga Club', who happens to teach Pregnancy Yoga (amongst other classes).

When I was pregnant with my first son, Oscar, I read so much about pregnancy and childbirth. However, after he was born, my interest in the childbirth process didn't wane.

A few years later, I decided to train as an antenatal teacher with the NCT. After teaching for five years, I decided that I would also like to be a midwife. I continued to teach classes on the Isle of Wight whilst doing my midwifery training with the University of Portsmouth. I even continued to teach them once I was a fully-fledged midwife - having registered with the Nursing and midwifery council in 1999.

Although I stopped teaching for the NCT a few years after becoming a midwife, I have continued to run classes for the NHS both face-to-face and, more recently, online. I love teaching lessons and have found that women who have attended my classes have felt that they have benefited them. I love seeing women and partners become less anxious as they learn, becoming strong and knowledgeable, and helping them through their own unique experiences.

I believe that this course will be a fantastic resource for you as you navigate your journey to parenthood.
