Newborn Baby Essentials Checklist

Hello! How are you doing?

Over the time that I have been a community midwife, many of the women I have cared for have wanted me to look at the things they have planned to buy or have bought for their baby. One thing is for sure; there is a lot of money being made from new parents-to-be. The truth is, babies actually need very little, no, really, they don't need much at all! Yes, they need clothes, nappies and somewhere to sleep, and bedding. A way of getting them around too. They do not even need their own nursery. If you plan to breastfeed, you will need some nursing bras, if you are formula feeding, bottles, teats and sterilising equipment.

So here it is, the essentials! One thing to mention is, you actually don't have to buy all these things new. Second or third hand is just fine for most items, with the exception of the mattress for the cot (or crib/moses basket) and the car seat.

  1. The Clothes! newborn size, cotton sleepsuits (can be called babygrows) (with arms and legs!) X 6, bodysuits (without arms and legs!)...essentially a vest that poppers over the nappy. Hats (cotton or wool), cardigan (1 or 2), baby socks, shawl, snowsuit if your baby is born in winter.

  2. Nursing bras and breast pads, if breastfeeding, consider also getting a good nipple cream. If formula feeding, bottles, teats, formula, a steriliser.

  3. Muslin squares, around 10. Oh my goodness, they will prove invaluable; they will mop up any baby puke, excess leaking of milk, and protect you from dribbles.

  4. Baby transport! Either a sling or a pram of some sort, a car seat if you have a car.

  5. Nappies (obvs!). Reusables or disposables. There are some fantastic reusables available, which are so popular. You can also get reusable and washable wipes now!

  6. Changing mat, it's challenging to keep things clean without one of these. plastic covered and able to be cleaned between (frequent) use.

  7. Moses basket or a carrycot or crib or a cot. Sheets and blankets for it.

Of course, you might want to buy some other items, but they are all optional, for example, a baby bath.

Often, family and friends will want to gift you something for the baby, so maybe hold off from the spending spree!

Have a very lovely day!

Juliet
